If the Repubs depth charged the Dems - by convicting Trump in the Senate and removing him from office - so they could get a better candidate in 2020....

How perfectly Machiavellian.

Yeah and Hillary was gonna be president.

I should point out that this scenario you seem to be playing with here has happened before, but not since 1884, and really would require the Republicans to have some sort of backbone (or at least a desire for something other than power. And when it came to presidents who didn't bumble into the office because they were VPs whose bosses died, it was in 1856.

Plus, Republicans did the same thing with Clinton when he ended 12 years of Republican domination and his ideology was a lot closer to those of Reagan and Bush than Trump is with, well anyone in the established US political scene.
