If it's a steady humming noise of any sort, I can usually let it lull me to sleep - loud or not. I used to zonk out in my ex's jeep when he was doing 60 with mud tires - HUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
The only problem is if the fan has a hair in it or a loose screw... then I can hear the faint rattling. It gets that neurotic sometimes.

I wore earplugs for years too because my sister snored like a demon and we had to share a room. I hated them though because they made me feel a bit disoriented. Plus, I didn't like the idea that I might not hear an actual important sound.
Just remember that if you study too much, it can have a negative impact. Video games would help me too - when my brother got his Game Cube, I'd sometimes wake up and play Zelda until my eyes felt heavy.

Ah TSQ that reminds me of one more sleep hygiene thing; avoid electronic stimulation of any sort right before bed. Yes, apparently you have found that playing a video game worked for you and I have done similar things, but we probably would have had better quality sleep by turning to something less mentally stimulating right before bed. One of the weirdest things I used to do that worked for about a month was to listen to Ministry - "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" right before bed at high volume. You can induce sleep by shocking your system or enervating it with electronic stimulation but the sleep quality will be terrible.

Prescribed sleeping pills always does the trick for me.
