BTW, I find it a bit egregious to call firearms the chief export. Do we even know where the crazed fool procured his firearm(s) yet?

I wasn’t referring to firearms as the chief export.

My apologies. Rereading through the thread, it was Zebo who first mentioned guns and lack of governmental control.  Blush

There's much better killers in the US than guns .... Hardly worth arguing over guns really when you see these stats...

"A problem is still a problem"

Yes, but is it a big problem? I believe guns are quite popular there. When death by firearm gets in the top 10, then it can be seen as big deal.
There's lots of things in life which aren't necessary for living. Alcohol, smokes, fast food, etc. The "unnecessary" deaths directly related to those "lifestyle related" things make guns deaths insignificant.

This of course also applies to most of the western world. You guys have just got one little extra phenomena to deal with. I'm just taking all emotion out of it and looking at the big picture.

Not a problem at all. Neither is alcohol or cars. They're all lifestyle choices with known and accepted (by society) side effects.
We can't have our cake and eat it too.

Looking at that list, I'm guessing that 90% of it applies to mankind in the last 100,000 years.
I think the real problem is life itself. Without it all those inherent problems go away also. Dunno
