The misapprehension that "renewable" energy = "green" energy is widespread, I've noticed many times in the past. "Bio mass" and "bio fuels" are renewable, to a degree, and perhaps sound green because they've got the word "bio" in them - but they are NOT green. Far far far from it.
Humans have had a century to change things, but even today we are not doing enough. "Bio fuels" are still an act of burning, and no burning is good.

The closest that renewables can get is pump assisted hydro - which has all of it's own issues. If we really wanted to boild down the answer..it's that the current crop of renewables could only be a transition strategy to some other x that we haven't invented yet, meanwhile...oil is still as useful as it ever was.

I think that you've misread the situation.
The film is the narrative of the radical left™ - the contention is that corporate centrists have married into the fossil fuel industry out of naivety or necessity.
For everything that it gets wrong, that much is true - and it's a disappointment to the set who imagined that naked consumerism would solve a problem created by naked consumerism. Not for nothing, it's also a pr problem for the same interests that the film focuses much of it's skepticism on.
