OP, you have to be you. Everything else is optional.

Welcome.
I was religious and the hardest part for me about leaving the faith was believing that hell wasn't real.
So even though I knew in my heart that it was all bullshit, I still feared hell for many years.
That is the amazing power of brainwashing.

I always knew it as 'everyone else is taken', but yours works even better I think.

Welcome.

Always happy to meet someone who has navigated their way out of religion.

I understand there are online communities of people who still live in very conservative, religious countries but keep their lack of belief secret (for various reasons).

I also know there are organizations you can reach out to for ex Muslims who will give you advice and are completely anonymous.

The only thing I ask, considering your location, is that you be very careful.

Actually, my knowledge of Islam an Islamism (the ideology of Islam) is pretty good. I've spent my whole life trying to understand it and make something out of it. Clearly I failed.
Hit me any time with any question you have in mind. I'll do my best.   Heart

Might be a good thread.

When I think about morality I tend to focus on sins (what is moraly wrnog). I don't focus on good deads because the motive to do good is always there no matter what kind of a person you are. You either do good deads to feel good or to make people like you. Both are positives as far as I'm concerned.

Back to the moraly wrong (sins) and I think about both personal and social sins

Personal sins: What is it that you would never allow yourself to do even if no one is looking? and if you do it you will feel guilty and you will promise yourself not to do it again?

Social sins: What is it that you would try not to do if someone is looking and even if you do it when no one is looking, you'd prefer that everyone should be stopped by society from doing it?

My question: if we didn't cheat one or two things from religion, how would we decide what's wrong?

You're getting it backwards. Religion co-opted morality, religion didn't CREATE morality. Chimps and bonobos learn to act morally toward each other.

Ethics are the things that allow us to live with other people.

Morals are the things that allow us to live with ourselves.

As a fellow person that lost his faith, Eastern Orthodoxy to be precise, not saying Christianity because this particular cult is a beast of its own, I'm trying to approach morality with the rule of thumb - inflict as little suffering as possible.
In regard to the so called personal sins you can start thinking if they are really imoral things that one does or just actions that someone avoids just because he wants to comply to a certain ideology.

I'm now at the end of the process of losing my faith. I used to be a Muslim. Now, Who the hell knows??!   I from a very conservative religious country. It shall not be named (Hint: desert+oil) It took me five or six years to arrive here. I was on the fence for two years.
I was a very ideological Muslim. Although, I wasn't practicing much. However, I was very enthusiastic about "Islam and its glory".
Anyway, here I am today, writing in an atheist forum!
I need to hear from those who have been through this phase. What should I do now? I can't be "business as usual". What should I expect? How should I approach life now? The only approach I had my entire life is the Islamic religious approach. Now, How should I live my life? Where should I take my morals from? I don't think atheists have no morals BTW but I have no idea how do they approach morality.

Now, it seems like I have to rethink my whole life. My whole future.

Keep in mind that I can't come out as an atheist, otherwise, I'm going to lose everyone I care about. Damn religion.

Anyone went through a similar experience and have any advice for me?

In modern times, between someone  having the ability to say "I don't believe in Jesus" in America,  versus someone who says in Saudi Arabia or Iran or Pakistan "I don't believe in Allah", at this point in history, at this period in time, being a former Christian, and I ditched that in my early 20s, long ago, YOU have a tougher road, not in your own logic, but in the laws and society you live under.

I never wanted to cut my biological family off.  But back when I met them, because I was adopted, I was born in 1966, but didn't find them until 1995. When I did seek them out as an adult, it turned out they were very religious, and my adoptive mother while Catholic never forced me to stay in religion. But once I met my biological family, it didn't take long to figure out that we had nothing in common. I never hated them, but I have no contact with them either.

Look at it this way. Those you love will stick with you. My late adoptive mother died a Catholic knowing I was a former Catholic and now atheist. I loved her over everything and she was my biggest hero.

Never look at family or friends or co workers as gangs who always have to 100% agree with you. But at the same time, nobody has the right to demand your silence or submission or to abuse you. You have the right to your own autonomy. But the reason I have no contact with my biological family, isn't because I hate them, but because we don't get along.

I'd say (not counting the infallible teaching of FSM obviously) a correct and honest reading of any religious book will lead you to throw in the trash.
"For the only way to eternal glory is a life lived in service of our Lord, FSM; Verily it is FSM who is the perfect being the name higher than all names, king of all kings and will bestow upon us all, one day, The great reclaiming"  -The Prophet Boiardi-

In my opinion you got it exactly right.
It's nonsense.
