ABC News

Quote:A conflict over what it means to be Christian is forcing a school in Kansas City, Missouri, to close.

Urban Christian Academy is a private, K-8 school with an enrollment of 100 that describes itself as providing "a tuition-free, high-quality, Christ-centered education for low-income students."

The school’s mission statement has always stressed inclusivity in general terms, noting that following Jesus "opens up doors and makes room at the table." But last year it added a paragraph to its website, which read in part, "We are an affirming school. We stand with the LGBTQIA+ community and believe in their holiness. We celebrate the diversity of God's creation in all its varied and beautiful forms."

According to the school, that update prompted donors to stop contributing, many of them citing their interpretation of Christianity as the reason. Now, UCA has announced it will close at the end of the school year due to the loss of financial support.

Speaking of that, here's a statement from Tennessee festival Bonnaroo

For context, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a law that limits "adult Cabaret performances" which include “that feature topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, male or female impersonators, or similar entertainers” (one of these things is not like the other...)

One very stupid talking point was the idea that because 20% of the population is gay that this somehow runs contrary to evolution. This is dumb because.

1. It assumes homosexuality is one thing rather than an interplay of different genes that serve another purpose and thus would not be eliminated. Also doesn't consider epigenetics.

2. Assumes evolution is smart and is trying to maximize reproduction. This isn't true as evolution allows any number of things that hamper reproduction or are not optimal for reproduction.

3. Assumes that 20% of the modern population is enough to in any way seriously hamper the continuation of the species and produce an evolutionary pressure to eliminate it. This also assumes 20% has always been the case and that this isn't an exceptional number. Also doesn't factor in population growth.

4. Assumes evolutionary pressures always favor the largest gene pool possible and then anything that narrows this is a trait evolution would eliminate.

Even if homosexuality does run counter to evolution...so what? Simply because something 'runs counter to evolution' is a pretty poor reason to legislate against it.

One argument Transphobes try and trot out is the idea that post-transition suicide is high. All this proves is post-op treatments are important and more emphasis should be put on them. Not that transit doesn't work or that it causes the problem. There is no evidence of this. Also, they ignore low rates of transition regret vs other surgeries or reasons for regret.

They will also try and post counter-studies to transition. This in no way counters the fact that overwhelmingly the available studies favor transitioning. This makes it the current consensus on the matter until that changes the science points in one direction.

They also complain that most post-transition is too short and all one needs to say to that is that this is the best current data either come up with a better study or shut up.

Lastly, their new fad is to try and point to nations moving away from affirmative care because they have caved into right-wing pressures as if that refutes the science.

Indeed it's a naturalism fallacy. But most who trot out this line of rhetoric are trying to push the idea that homosexuality is a learned thing or that children are being "indoctrinated " to be gay. because there is no way nature would allow this. Which is silly as if evolution has no pressure to eliminate something it generally won't. To date, I have yet to see homophobe come up with such a pressure.

Tennessee May Allow Clerks to Refuse Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples

The state’s House of Representatives Monday approved House Bill 878, which allows anyone to refuse to solemnize a marriage if they have religious or conscience-based objections. The Senate is considering a similar bill. If it becomes law, it could be used against same-sex, interracial, and interfaith couples as well as couples that include a transgender person.

Tennessee legislation would empower government employees, such as those who issue marriage licenses in courthouses, to discriminate against couples who offend their religious views, according to its critics and local media.

The sponsor of the companion Senate bill is Republican Sen. Mark Pody, who has previously introduced legislation aimed at undoing or at least undermining marriage equality. Pody once said God had called him to stop same-sex marriages. A Senate committee is scheduled to discuss his bill next Monday.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

One dumb anti-trans argument pushed by the right is the idea. That because we didn't hear about Trans Suicides a lot in the past it means gender-affirming care isn't needed or trans people are a new thing. This is stupid because Trans people are a tiny minority of people and most trans people in the past were likely not open about being trans or were wrongfully diagnosed with something else so when they did commit suicide it was just counted in the general suicide statistics.
