I wonder if that difference in perception is reinforced in our society as a kind of bleed-through of the internal reinforcement of a fragile masculinity.

That sounds Freudian. Is all public affections of love between two individuals of the same age, whether the same sex or gender or not, indicative of romantic love?

I don't think so, myself, but I recognize that there might be some anthropology mixed up in this, maybe something to do with weeding out slackers in the hunt.
