Fun with computers.

Fun with computers.
Sometimes a simple reboot fixes things. My speakers went out, although the icon on the tool bar said they were full volume. So I rebooted, didn't fix it. Then I went to settings, audio and "troubleshoot", checked the system, tried again, still nothing.

So then I went and cleared all my cookies, cache, still nothing. But at the same time forgot, that by clearing all that, it logs you out of the websites you are on. I have several passwords on different sites of course, and cant always remember them exactly.

Anywho, I finally did an update on Windows/DELL, rebooted, and my speakers finally started working again. But then it took me another half hour to log back into everything trying to remember my passwords.

The entire ordeal started when my friend on FB called me on a voice chat, but I could not hear him.  From that moment to the time I finally fixed everything, it took me an hour and a half.

I feel lucky though. Many people are not techies, and would take it to a repair shop, or even toss it and buy a new computer.

If it happens again, try just restarting your computer.

That is always my first thing. And I did do that this time too. IE my first sentence. "Sometimes a simple reboot fixes things."

With anything mechanical or with technology, always start with the simplest solution first then work your way through more detailed troubleshooting.

It turned out ultimately a reboot wouldn't have fixed it, which was the first thing I did. I needed updates.

1. Reboot.

If that doesn't work

2. Clear history/cache/cookies then reboot.

3. If that doesn't work, check for updates then reboot.

Yes, I did, it is always my first default. That doesn't always fix things. Sometimes it does, but not always.

It’s from ‘The IT Crowd’, just like it says in the video.

Ok, never heard of it before. That is a funny video.

Long ago as a teen I wasn't as savvy, I had moments like that with technology, like stereos, TVs and computers.

But again, with computers, while rebooting should be your first default, it doesn't always fix things.

9 out of 10 times, a reboot fixes whatever issue turns up in a computer/printer/router/sandwich. It's that 1 out of 10 times some troubleshooting is necessary.

I have automatic updates turned on. Yes, it's a pain having to allow slow, regular reboots to install the updates say, once a month, and sometimes Microsoft throw in a bit of crappy extra software that needs manually uninstalling, but on balance it's still worth going the auto-update route IMO. Fewer serious IT headaches.
