Why $15 an hour minimum wage SUCKS

The worst part of it - is all the people who get screwed - by giving "mo money" to burger flippers and latte slingers.

Example: My SO currently makes better than double the current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour - working accounts payable for a local family owned business. It's not great money - but it is pretty much the scale for such jobs in this area. She has a 4 year degree in accounting and 25 years experience.

Now along comes Joe Politician - ordering up the political blowjob - so he can score some votes by looking all "compassionate". Gotta get "mo money" to the little guy. Snap- bang - gee whiz -- the greeter at Walmart is making $15 an hour - less than 10 percent less of what my SO makes. Isn't that fucking great???

So why did she spend 4 years getting a degree??? Why did we do without fun toys and not take any vacations for the last 5 years - so we could pay off her student loans???

Gee -- they want to make college free too.....

So now my SO will essentially be a minimum wage worker. DON'T even go on with moronic drivel of "her employer will raise her wages too".....

Are you THAT FUCKING STUPID???? He will not raise her wages. He will FREEZE wages - probably for years - AND he will be forced to lay off some of the employees. Unlike the government - he can't just print up more money when he needs it. Sure - he can pass on some of the costs to customers by raising prices.... HEY - WELCOME TO INFLATION!!!!

ALL minimum wage does - is ensure there are more poor people. All at the bottom of the pay scale.

And you wonder why the rich keep getting richer.

Quelle surprise, your whole philosophy boils down to "fuck you, I got mine!"

I wouldn't be too surprised if the tories turn around after Brexit and scrap the minimum wage. It's largely because being in the EU makes it hard to get rid of it (for many reasons, not least everybody economically active would decamp to somewhere better paying) that it's still there.

Sweet.

I always found it rather ironic that the uneducated people on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum who supported conservative ideology via Republican candidates would always take full and often unfair advantage of Democratic assistance programs. These are the same people who remain unemployed rather than do the jobs they complain the immigrants are taking away from them.

Yup Rightwing economics is full of fallacies and contradictions and bolstered by buzzwords, fearmongering, And a rejection of the demonstrable economic policy.

RE: Why $15 an hour minimum wage SUCKS
Something that has not been mentioned here is inflation. The minimum wage has never been tied to inflation, so we have to periodically go through this same argument when Democrats have enough votes to push through a Minimum wage bump. But then the cycle starts all over because money just keeps getting less valuable as time goes on.

My question to OLB is this, what if everyone got tired of the low pay and crappy conditions and got better educated and got better jobs, so there was no one to flip a burger for you? Economic laws would predict that burger prices would sky rocket because there would be no one to flip them, and that would likely lead to the end of the fast food industry, just to mention a miniscule fraction of such markets.

I don't think anyone would realistically suggest that the most menial of jobs pull in six figures, but what would society really look like if a burger flipper pulled down $25/hour? Would that really be so bad? How much money would that take from the franchise owner? From the restaurant execs? The big stock holders? Maybe they would have one less luxury car to drive. And if we're criticizing what people do to earn their money, can anyone really say a board member who goes to a handful of meetings deserves 7 figures for their trouble?

Unions served several important purposes. Not least of which was forcing the greedy industrialists to improve working conditions, hours and pay to at least a humane level. And union contracts historically set the basic level of compensation for the rest of the general workforce. It's a common Republican myth that "unions destroyed industry in the US". Unions were infiltrated by organized crime; that much is true, and they certainly made mistakes, but they were not the cause of decline in American industry.

All of this stuff has deep, deep economic roots as far back as the Roman Empire, perhaps further. Perhaps we should just go back the guild system developed during the days of Diocletian just so no one gets uppity ideas. The struggle for the worker has always been how to increase egalitarianism while oligarchs push against such progress. And yes, socialism has played almost as important a role in shaping the American system as any other ideology.
Why is it so?
