I let my cats outside when they want to go out, and am often judged for that. They're happy as hell, too.
That being said, I will continue to put considerable effort into anti-declawing legislation and measures. I am in the veterinary medicine field and it's a growing sentiment among my peers.
My dad was a veterinarian. He simply did not like cats at all. But he was also against declawing them, way before being against it was the norm.
Our vets don't do it. Period, end of discussion. It's considered a breach of medical ethics, some vets will still do it, but their numbers are dwindling. Veterinary schools are not all teaching declawing surgeries anymore. The AAHA (a national veterinary org) strongly opposes it.
If The Flintstones have taught us anything, it's that pelicans can be used to mix cement.
