teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Why?
Does Jackson have a conflicting engagement?

Maybe now Biden can get busy carving Trump’s face into that mountain. Long overdue.

Was a Democrat.
....
Interesting...
It meant something vastly different then than it does today. If Jackson were alive today, he’d be a Trumpian Republican.

Bear in mind, the Republican Party wouldn’t exist for a couple decades after The Jackson Administration, and, as you could probably guess from that, the cultural climate was radically different from what it was now. Advocacy for civil rights for, well, anyone but white landowning men was still in its infancy, and the most radical voices with any sort of political pull (except maybe William Lloyd Garrison, but he was very much an outlier) were still saying that slavery was bad and should end, but maybe we should send them back to Africa. That’s the level America was at during the 1830s.
