I sell bottles of water from Nestlé…uh, I mean Lourdes for only $120 (or two for $200). Please PM me if you want the details on ordering!

I can vouch for the water! It miraculously cures thirst and dehydration!
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.

God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?

you know this whole thing reminds me of Void of Silence's Human Antithesis song. Yet again if you were in my country and decided to pay some certain shrines a visit you'd be amazed by how so many people can be stupid at the same time. Then again this is just the sort of things you'd expect from dedicated religious fanatics.
In the deep forest by a yearnings side
Is a flower growing in the still of the night.
Moonlit night with her would blend - if you break her...
Your life must end!

Yep...pretty much nothing stupider than a catholic.

You forgot gullible, closed minded and mind bogglingly superstitious.Devil

Some basic stats :

Poor, stupid and manipulated little fruitcake Bernadette Soubirous had her hallucinations at Lourdes between 11 February and 16 July 1858.

According to Wikipedia, an estimated 200 million have visited Lourdes since 1860. The Catholic church has officially recognised a total of 67 cures. None were amputees.

The general rate of spontaneous remission OVERALL is [conservatively] estimated at 1:30,000.which is about 33 per million or 660 per 200million. [conservatively] No amputees.

Catholicism is about as pagan as you get in Christianity. All those saints barely this side of "god" status and the places that were sacred to them, like wells and caves...well, half of them were adapted from pagan deities anyway.

It's complete and utter negligence, the child should be seized.

I'm aware of spontaneous remission (which I use to combat the "miracle" healing claims), but I've never seen a rate for it. Do you have a source for this number? I'd love to quote it, but I'm sure I'd be challenged to provide a source.

When I expressed disgust at this idiotic charade I had people respond by asking "What does it matter to you if they go on this trip?".

What does it matter? Well, there's a 12 year old girl who is probably being pumped full of hope that she will be cured by taking a magic bath. When she is NOT cured by the magic bath what will that do to her psyche? Will it be an incredible letdown? Will she start to think that "God" doesn't love her? Will she wonder what she did wrong that "God" is denying her a magic cure? Will she think she's being punished?

No one can know how it will effect this girl when her condition doesn't change. THAT is why it matters.

I also mentioned that it matters because, by giving this stupidity news coverage, it gives credibility to "miracle cures" that is not deserved. Consequently, others may be inspired to waste their time, money and energy pursuing a "miracle" that will not happen.

Of course, the deluded replied back with moronic platitudes like "the family is covering all the bases" and "the water from Lourdes is an added plus".

Then why doesn't the family have a voodoo doctor chant over their daughter and sprinkle healing powder? You know, as "an added plus". And why not have a Native American Medicine Man chant over their daughter and waft smoke? You know, as "an added plus". And why don't they offer up a sacrifice and kill a goat? You know, as "an added plus". With all these "added pluses" how could they go wrong?

Yeesh.

Seems like people didn't drink enough of the water since most of them returned with the illness without being cured, which is idiocy.
