I'm aware of spontaneous remission (which I use to combat the "miracle" healing claims), but I've never seen a rate for it. Do you have a source for this number? I'd love to quote it, but I'm sure I'd be challenged to provide a source.

When I expressed disgust at this idiotic charade I had people respond by asking "What does it matter to you if they go on this trip?".
What does it matter? Well, there's a 12 year old girl who is probably being pumped full of hope that she will be cured by taking a magic bath. When she is NOT cured by the magic bath what will that do to her psyche? Will it be an incredible letdown? Will she start to think that "God" doesn't love her? Will she wonder what she did wrong that "God" is denying her a magic cure? Will she think she's being punished?
No one can know how it will effect this girl when her condition doesn't change. THAT is why it matters.
I also mentioned that it matters because, by giving this stupidity news coverage, it gives credibility to "miracle cures" that is not deserved. Consequently, others may be inspired to waste their time, money and energy pursuing a "miracle" that will not happen.
Of course, the deluded replied back with moronic platitudes like "the family is covering all the bases" and "the water from Lourdes is an added plus".
Then why doesn't the family have a voodoo doctor chant over their daughter and sprinkle healing powder? You know, as "an added plus". And why not have a Native American Medicine Man chant over their daughter and waft smoke? You know, as "an added plus". And why don't they offer up a sacrifice and kill a goat? You know, as "an added plus". With all these "added pluses" how could they go wrong?
Yeesh.
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.
God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?
