I did search through eleven pages, thinking surely there was already such a thread, but even if there was it is ancient news by now. Therefore, new thread.

We managed to get through 2020 without the concern of mass shootings to bother us on top of C-19, but now it seems mass shooters are crawling from the woodwork to once antagonize us regarding the sad fact that conservatives enjoy our liberal tears over wanting reasonable gun control laws.

Anywho, let the mass shootings commence.

I think it's almost exclusively an American problem because it combines a constellation of strong American attitudes:

~ Problems can be solved through violence.

~ If you disagree with me you can fuck off and die.

~ Life is like a TV show and I should be the star. 

~ The coolest guys are like Clint Eastwood, who say something tough and then kill their enemies. 

~ If your life is a failure it's your own fault and only weak people ask for help. (It's better to die like an action movie than to appear weak.)

Reads more like an anti-americans view of america that dovetails with RWNJ attitudes. RWNJs are in the minority, and shrinking.

The american attitude on the issue is that we're broadly in favor of gun control (and always have been). Just about everyone agrees that crazy shouldn't have a gun ...but even more tellingly, 9/10 dems think that no one should have assault rifles(tms) - and at least half of republicans agree.

That a bunch of nutjobs engineered a minority capture of the state and then failed to represent their own constituency just as surely as they refused to represent the other guys shouldn't be taken to be an american attitude on any position.

Movement Conservatives embraced the myth of the American cowboy as a white man standing against the “socialism” of the federal government as it sought to level the economic playing field between Black Americans and their white neighbors. Leaders like Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater personified the American cowboy, with his cowboy hat and opposition to government regulation, while television Westerns showed good guys putting down bad guys without the interference of the government.

After the Brady Bill passed in 1993, the NRA paid for lawsuits in nine states to strike it down. Although until 1959, every single legal article on the Second Amendment concluded that it was not intended to guarantee individuals the right to own a gun, in the 1970s, legal scholars funded by the NRA had begun to argue that the Second Amendment did exactly that.

When it comes to the last shooting: Boulder, Colorado passed an assault weapons ban in 2018.
The NRA sued the city and a judge struck down the ban 10 DAYS GO.
The Boulder shooter bought the gun 6 DAYS before the shooting.
These deaths were the direct result of the NRA’s intervention.

One of bill mahers guests made a good point a bit back. We don't have capitalism or socialism, we have cronyism - pure and straight. The problems we have aren't the ills of either system that we don't have, but the ills of the one that we do.

So, for example, the extent to which we consider any action on any issue from an institutional standpoint is how well that plan sorts people into lever pulling automotons that can be used to reward one's circle of friends and enrich ones donors. This is the explanation for why measures with broad public support across the aisle have little political value. Things like gun control. Getting together with your constituency and the other guys constituency to do something that both constiuencies want? Fuck that.

How are we supposed to make sure that the inevitable largess only flows to our own up and downlines?
