Rural politicians have the single best hook for gun control at their disposal. Their constituency is poor and actually bought guns with their ability to hold value in mind - in addition to having most of the guns.
Can we say buyback stimmy for the suffering rural poor? Dirty little secret, we already have the programs. The us gov seeks packagers to fulfill orders for massive quantities of guns and ammo. It's a neverending stream of purchases. The most successful arms dealers in the world aren't the people we might think.

From what I've heard re Boulder shooter: Family reports that the individual had mental health issues, sounds like delusions of persecution and paranoia. Also the family took away the gun prior and then returned it to him.
System failure on many levels.

And if you limit access to firearms, you have to be consistent across the states. For instance, Illinois (and specifically Chicago) has some pretty strict gun laws. And yet we still have a shitton of gun-related crime. People, including ex-president Trump have used it as an example of why gun control doesn’t work. Thing is, this fails to account for how easy it is to buy guns in a state with more lax laws and drive them to a state with stricter laws.
Fact is, Not only is Illinois just south of Wisconsin, but a majority of the population is clustered in such a way that it takes no more than two hours’ drive to go to a state with far lax gun laws, get a gun that wouldn’t be legal in Illinois, and bring it back home. I personally have crossed the Illinois-Wisconsin border dozens of times (possibly over a hundred) in my life and have had to deal with police wanting to deal with what I had on my person absolutely never. Admittedly, I wasn’t bringing anything more illegal than pirated music, but still, once you actually get the guns from a state with looser laws, it’s that fucking simple to bring them into a state where they’re illegal.

I think it's been shown in several of these instances that shaky mental health has been a big factor.
It would be nice if this country would take mental health care seriously but since they don't take any sort of health care seriously, I don't think that's gonna happen.
The issue brought up a lot is selling guns to people who are mentally ill being THE problem. Mental illness problems can take hold at any point in a person's life. We can't foresee when someone is going to manifest symptoms or suffer a psychotic break.

That's the excuse that's been thrown out there but who knows. Maybe the family is just grasping for a reason.
