Immaterial. YOU made the claim that one thing can be replaced with another and be 'no different'. A new tree planted in the same spot would not be the same tree.

that is most material.   is there an aspect of the lost that is irreplaceable?    a dog’s personality molded from past contact would be difficult to replace.   it would be a stretch to say the there are aspects of that tree which could not be replaced with a transplant.

there are many other trees that had been much closer part of a community for over 200 years,   this tree after all is mainly known for being in a scenic spot, not for being part of a community.

I don't get the feeling that you care much about community and this is just your way of arguing.

I also don't get the feeling that you bond with anyone or care much about anything other than the supposed facts you share as though you are the smartest guy in the room.

Maybe you don't give a good damn about the tree but you should at least be able to agree that act of vandalism was uncalled for.

i do agree it is an reprehensible act of juvenile delinquency and vandalism,   but we should keep a perspective of its significance as a cultural loss.   i brought up hadrian’s wall to show where the bulk of the cultural value in the environs of the tree in question is, and the destruction of section of the great wall example of a more direct and substantial cultural loss that occurred at almost the same time but passed with hardly any notice.
