Adulterous woman
John 8:1-11 tells us how Jews wanted to stone an adulterous woman but Jesus told them not to, and therefore they didn't.

But why would Jews ask Jesus whether they should obey the Torah or not?! And then listen to him?

Compliance with Mosaic Law was not a joke. It was rigorously enforced; after all, that was what public stoning was for.

It's like if today law enforcement officers strap a convict to the electric chair in Kentucky to execute him, but someone, who has nothing to do with the judiciary system, says "Don't do it" and they don't do it.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The idea, in short, is that they were trying to trick him. Testing his cunning as a hero. The precise opposite of what they expected happens, he out tricks them, effectively making them prisoners of their own trap.

Poorly thought out fiction, is my guess. It truly is a wonder the nonsense in which adherents believe based merely on fallible faith alone.

It's obviously important to tell our stories this way, while I don't want to say that all cultures and stories are exactly the same, it actually is hard to find a culture with no trickster hero or trickster god story. They probably exist to explain (or create, or reinforce) the value of being clever.

To use one of the more direct parallels between the characters, a small snippet from wiki will be instructive.

Quote:He was almost put into herem (excommunication) for the above incident in which he showed "dishonor" to God, as if he had imposed himself upon God. However, Shimon ben Shetach, the brother of Queen Shlomtzion, excused him, saying that Honi had a special relationship with God.
Sound familiar?

Why is it always the woman that gets stoned and never the man?

Clearly the scribes and Pharisees of that day were envious of the Lord Jesus because of His teachings and because the "world has gone after Him" (John 12:19). They were losing their grip on the people so they often "tested" Him, "that they might have something of which to accuse Him."

Despite that, the Lord Jesus gracefully teaches a new fundamental principle, which is that we should not judge others because we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). He expressly states it in Matthew 7:1 "Judge not, that you be not judged."  If one is looking for sin, one need only look in the mirror.

When the Lord Jesus finally answered them, He saidHe who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.

Notice the word says those who were about to literally execute the woman became "convicted by their conscience" and left one by one.

---
Within the context of not judging I cannot help but recall the most recent account of the "Moses Lake boaters who allegedly harassed another group over gay pride flags. Then their boat burst into flames." - then they were rescued by their victims.  Judge not... God is the Judge of all.

I've always struggled to see the utility of that advice to humans in human societies. We're going to do it anyway, because it would be imprudent to the point of absurdity to take this gods advice in this matter....and that does seem like something a god should already know.

I hear you, because of a natural human inclination to judge / sin since the fall of man.

However, I tell you that with continuous prayer and by the grace of God, in His strength, by the Holy Spirit - one does so/wrong less and less, growing from grace to grace in practice - ultimately relying on being clothed in the righteousness of the Lord Jesus, the Christ - the only Holy One by and through whom we can ever be reconciled back to God. (Acts 4:12)
