One idea religious fundamentalists seem to love is the idea that ancestors were so dumb they couldn't make simple observations and inferences and therefore only divine revelation could explain whatever phenomenon they want to claim their holy book knew before science. This is both absurd and insulting. Our ancestors believed in sorts of crazy shit but they were not totally ignorant or totally dumb.
