Something for nothing

RE: Something for nothing
We all agree now that a 50 km x 50 km solar array, or, its equivalent, is sufficient to head off global warming while allowing all of us to enjoy the equivalent electric cars and trucks that we now have.

RE: Something for nothing
Let's put paid to the bullshit. EVs are producing fewer emissions over the life of the vehicle than cars equipped with internal combustion engines, full fucking stop. This is true no matter what form of electrical generation provides the power, though it is more beneficial if the power source is also green. Coupled with the strides being made in recycling the rare earth components of the batteries, EVs keep looking better and better. As more power production switches to cleaner technologies, and more rare earth materials are recycled, total emissions will fall even further.

EVs are not a silver bullet to defeat global warming, especially while they remain too pricey for Joe Average. But, no one technology will do that by itself. Claiming they're worse for the environment is ignorant at best, intellectually dishonest at worst. And, shitting on a better alternative in favor of waiting for some mythical 'perfect' alternative is just plain stupid. We should embrace any technology the reduces greenhouse gasses by even a tiny amount. Take the base hits and the runs will come. Count on the home runs, and you'll lose a lot of ball games. This isn't as game humanity can afford to lose.

Um, the sun is always "up" somewhere on earth.

Yes, of course. But you also need to consider things like the fact that the full solar constant is for surfaces perpendicular to the direction of the sun and ignores atmospheric absorption.

Also, this was specifically for the power of the US, so I limited it to just the US.

It doesn' t make you right.

...

Simple to prove?

Hardly. The variables needed to come up with real numbers?  You ONLY need the following - the hydrocarbon waste output of every ICE on the planet -
Vs the hydrocarbon output of the percentage of use of every fuel fired power plant used to recharge every EV on the planet. Don' t forget the mining and recycling factors for all those exotic batteries......

Get all those numbers and we can do the math.

Or - just believe the advertising that says what a swell person you are for buying this new 50 thousand dollar consumer product....

Lol, it’s YOUR claim, YOU get the numbers. Otherwise, abandon this failed argument.

Not sure where you got that $50k price tag from - there are at least 20 models of electric car priced under $50 000.

Boru

Edit: FYI, I found the numbers, and it doesn’t look good for you. You can find them yourself - takes less than two minutes of web searching.

I suppose I could simply tell you the numbers, but then what would happen to Man’s search for knowledge?

And EVERYTHING on the internet is unbiased and accurate......

Sure.

That’s another dodge.

The numbers I found weren’t internet pieces, but studies from Exeter, Cambridge, and MIT.

It really doesn' t matter.

You' re just gonna bee leeeve....

And just for fun- when we get everyone driving these electric cars - where is the electricity going to come from?

What I see is everyone wanting the status quo - make no real changes - and everyhing will be hunky dory....All made possible by new technology ( that never quite shows up).

Me - I think it' s all bullshit.

We are just fucked as a species.

I' m glad I didn't bring any kids into the world who will have to face the excesses of the current generations.

Yeah, I’m gonna believe what scientists and engineers tell me about science and engineering - I’m funny like that. The alternatives are to 1) dive down the rabbit hole and suspect that scientists and engineers are all part of some vast, global conspiracy to trick us into buying electric cars, or 2) follow your lead and spout my own personal biases as established facts without even attempting to educate myself.
