I just have a difficult time remembering what's okay and what's not.
I find it odd to use wife and husband when clearly those are gender based labels.

Then again, I'm one of those people who's not a big fan of marriage as an institution to begin with, so, the terms for it seem outdated and restrictive. If social convention is going to be turned on its head (and I personally don't care if it is), I would appreciate some understanding when I mess up whatever confusing language I'm expected to use. The first time I heard non-binary, I thought what the hell?! It's dumb to expect people to understand something they've never experienced before.
Why is it so?

Usually when I make a mistake, I apologize. Because it was an accident and I didn't mean for it to happen/to cause harm to anyone. "Sorry" is the thing you say for those specific circumstances where offense or action of some kind was unintentional. If you meant to do it, you wouldn't give an apology because what happened was your intent, so, there's nothing to feel sorry about. Bold mine - does that mean something in your language? WTF moment early today.
Biker is the type of asshole who would call a guy with long hair a girl by mistake and then not apologize because he doesn't agree with guys wearing long hair.

Well, if you don't care, then you might consider having a more understanding attitude. Think about it this way: isn't it weird that we resolve to treat people in a certain way and assign them social roles based on if they have a "long and dangly" swinging between their legs? But that's gender norms for you. Certain people don't want to conform to these norms. That's all. I'm not applying social pressure or anything. (I think "social pressure" might be your real gripe anyway.) What I do is try to treat trans people with dignity and respect... including respecting their pronouns. I don't feel the need to buy into whatever pronoun package is being sold, nor am I offended by it. I just try to be decent toward everybody. I think a similar attitude might suit you, Biker. |
