I think most people would chose cars over walking or riding horses. But sane people know that burning fossil fuels to do so is killing our planet, regardless of how artistic the old and dangerous technology is.

In short...no - but they used to.  We spent alot of money over decades figuring that part of spaceflight out.  The original sop was a pass through diet pre and during flight, and if you did have to take a hard shit, you were going to have to pull the turd out.  No gravity assist.  There's a manual.

I think the most important thing our species has to tackle are equally important. #1 tackling climate change. #2 building a meteor defense system. But, after that, our species really needs to accept we cannot indefinitely expand. I hate that my species cannot see to a great enough degree, that we cannot keep expanding forever. Humans do not understand to a great enough degree, that birth far outpaces death. Humans do not want to accept that we are the ultimate invasive species.

I agree about tackling climate change and the meteor defense, but we do need to get off the planet in large numbers. The phrase "all our eggs in one basket" comes to mind.
(Though to be honest, I'm not sure where we should go, Mars or the Moon in underground caverns maybe (are there any caverns not under ground??) or maybe large orbiting systems like O'Neal cylinders maybe?)
What we really need is a more efficient way to get into orbit
The meek shall inherit the Earth, the rest of us will fly to the stars.

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud ..... after a while you realise that the pig likes it!

So do you think his opinion about space and spaceflight is irrelivant?

Can’t say, as I don’t what his opinions on those things are.

I thought he did a great job in the original series. And I liked him more in T.J Hooker.

Shatner’s never been a great actor. He’s competent and reliable if you don’t expect too much.

So he needs to be more of a loudmouth before you approve of him?

So when does Bill get his Nobel Prize nomination?
