Or there’s something uncanny there, behind the text or woven into it.

Hence my facination with Swedenborg, the Gnostics, and such...I am not reading for answers; but rather for the experience of particapring in the Divine. ...and no, God did not talk to a snake...that's just stupid.
When your culture has been steeping in its influence for two millennia, it's hardly surprising that it's going to ring some bells.

I've never had cherry pie.
It's just about cherry season here. Always too expensive to consider using them for cooking. Perhaps this year.
The Xmas hams are out and frozen Turkeys should be available soon. Prawn (shrimp) cocktails are a family tradition. Frozen green prawn meat is currently $32 kg. Over $40 at the supermarket.
Trivia: Friends on Salt Spring Island BC had a pie cherry tree. I was so impressed. That was in 1985. I've still never heard of such a tree here.

I've never had cherry pie. Cherry pie appears to be an american myth. I have cooked apple pie, and occasionally rhubarb pie. Cherry pie is some mythological thanksgiving thing. Even in my travels in America I have never seen it as an option on any menu. It is like pumpkin pie. Nobody actually likes it but tradition demands it.

My maternal grandmother used to bake cherry/rhubarb pies. They were excellent with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I miss those.

Yes, that is true. You have to know the language to interpret the message. I also get a lot from the Lotus Sutra and Lao Tzu but and less familiar with those sacred traditions. English poetry is also evocative.
The inner experience of life may indeed be embodied by quantifiable material processes (or not) but that says next to nothing about the content and significance of those processes. And it is true that there is as much risk of reading something into a text as discovering authorial intent. That challenge is part of the joy of reading sacred literature, not a reason to dismiss it.

It’s probably not the same thing to dismiss the faeries as it is to dismiss the significance of religious literature. Most of the people devoting their lives to these narratives, professionally, do not take their superstitious claims seriously.
