Is Soup a Drink?

This is an old debate I've seen on an old forum I was a member of a while back, and thought it might make for some good discussion. What do you think? Can soup be considered a drink? I always considered it a food, but after having some soup where you basically have to drink it to finish it I'm in the 'it depends' category.

My erstwhile father in law opined that soup is just flavoured water. Looked at that truly nasty Cuppa Soup which comes in packets, I hasten to agree.

In winter I really enjoy tomato soup (from a can)  I drink that from a large mug, often with dry biscuits (crackers) crumbled in.

But, I wouldn't call my home made pea and ham soup anything less than a meal. Always eaten with a spoon.

So, I'm afraid I need to sit on the fence.  Perhaps it's either depending on the dish and/or the eye of the beholder.

Hmm, I guess it depends on how thick the soup is and what's inside the soup if it's like potatoes and something you can choke on it's a soup, not a drink. If it's something you won't choke on and it's something you can drink then I can see the argument that it's a drink? Do I consider soup a drink? no. I consider soup, soup. But is that because I was raised with the idea of what soup is supposed to look like? Be careful I'll philosophies the soup. No, in all seriousness i consider soup, a soup.
