Running versus walking?

Running versus walking?
It's an age-old debate, but, I've gained 10 lbs over the last 2 months due to the cold weather, and, so, I am in the mood to talk about it.

I like walking, as it is easier on my legs, plus, I am able to read, surf the web on my phone, etc., while walking.

I walk about 3-5 times a day with my dog in the country around here. I love it. It's not very interesting right now but in the spring and summer, we see all sorts of critters and birds on our walks. Stumbling upon deer, spying beavers swimming in the pond, seeing blue herons in the pond, etc.

In the drier months, I like to wear my good shoes. Right now, I wear my crappy boots and yak traks because there's snow and ice everywhere. Still, daily walks are great to get that fresh air and meager sunlight.

I ran regularly for years, until my knees couldn’t take it anymore. I walk a fair bit (it’s a small town), but that doesn’t really feel like exercise, so I’ve switched over to calisthenics.

I have had people tell me that walking does not burn calories even after I point out the Work-Energy theorem to them, which ends the conversation.

Those people are wrong - EVERYTHING burns calories. Running, walking, swimming, sitting still and breathing shallowly - everything. That’s kind of definitional.

Walking is good for you.  Any movement is better than the sitting around most of us do these days.  Run if you can.  People around here bike like crazy.  Trails everywhere.

I hike, which is walking in varying terrain, carry various weight, depending on the distance.  Here's some gps tracks and pictures from where I'm trying to mark the old roads and trails between Dahl Memorial and Kapark trailheads.  People tend to only hike publicized places with fancy trails these days instead of looking at a topo and taking off like we did back in the day.

I can't run anymore because my feet develop metatarsalgia, which feels like there is a rock in my shoe under the ball of the foot.

I just will the fat away.

If that doesn't work, High Intensity Interval Training.

RE: Running versus walking?
Walking in my opinion is so much better.  Obviously unless you're training for a specific sport that involves running.  For general day to day life walking to me is so much safer and enjoyable, plus if you want to get more out of it just walk faster or up a steeper hill.
I've been walking with a few different people from work, with some people it's an enjoyable stroll with others it's been a grueling challenge, so you just get out of it whatever you want to put into it.

Also I've had knee injuries before that have been horrible to recover from so I always stick to whatever is easiest on my knees.

Saying that I've been able to push ridiculous amounts of weight on the leg extension machines at the gym, but I feel with slow weight exercise I can always stop quickly if I feel a twinge of pain and either stop entirely or adjust my position or something.

I don't really know anyone who's active who's over 25 who doesn't have some kind of knee issue so I'm pretty overprotective about my knees.

But also, I just want to say that when it comes to weight loss it's never really made too much of a difference to me what kind of exercise I've done, it's mainly been what diet I'm on. I mean I've always been fairly active, but it hasn't made too much difference if I did long distance cycling, short bouts of HIIT, focused more on weights, just walking or whatever.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I was a hard-core jogger in my youth. Ten+ miles plus a day, several times a week, out in the scorching sun. I honestly haven't tried jogging again since I messed up my ankle.

I am on my feet a lot at work, twelve hour shifts every weekend, and that's the extent of the exercise I get these days.

My physicians tell me to keep walking, even with a funky knee. I'll probably follow their advice until I can't.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.
