The Future of Democracy
|
For better or for worse, it’s a subject that I haven’t been able to get off my mind, either shortly pre-election 2020, or post-election.
I’d be surprised if I was, but I’ll ask anyways; am I the only one becoming increasingly worried about the future of democracy? 
Maybe you should be asking if democracy is a good thing, or, at least the only thing? Are you worried about the survival of our species, Homo Sapiens?

I am concerned, yes. I am greatly concerned about the climate and environment as well. I should emphasize that my concerns about the future of democracy are not so much because democracy is ‘the greatest thing ever’ or anything like that, but more so that I sense a significant threat of autocracy. You’re not derailing the thread, imo. But it sounds to me like you’re talking specifically about capitalism. When I say I worry about democracy, I’m not necessarily thinking specifically about capitalism. Greed is indeed very much a part of the problem, after all. 
I don't think Jehanne is derailing either. I very much dig Jehanne's input here. It's a good question. "Where does capitalism end and democracy begin?" Are the two connected? Should they they be catogorized together? Might, they even be antipodal? Is socialism -more- or -less- democratic than capitalism? Good questions.
What democracy?

Where I live, in the US, the right to vote for representatives is enshrined in the constitution. Therefore the US fits both the definitions of a Constitutional Republic AND a Representative Democracy. But splitting hairs over what to label our government isn’t really what concerns me. What concerns me is the rise of pro-autocratic sentiment among certain vocal minorities, and whether they can get a foothold in the government due to disproportional representation. That, is my primary concern.

But as scary as that is, reading about ultra conservative movements trying to use a clause to trigger a constitutional convention through state legislatures is even more unnerving. Another thing that concerns me more than Trump is the prospect of someone trying to do what he did during his lame duck period, but actually being competent and smart about it. That could be disastrous. |
