No more Republican Presidents, at least conservative ones.

And I think that the path for such a future might be (at least theoretically) easy to pull off.

I’ve mentioned before that the only Republican President to be elected by a majority of the popular vote since I was born was Dubya in 2004. Bush’s first term and Trump’s only term only happened because of the Electoral College. Get rid of that, no more Republican presidents. And if the NPVIC ends up enacted by enough states (enough states have passed it for 190 of the 538 seats in the electoral college to be covered by it with 45 pending [Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania]; theoretically, if those three states plus Florida or Texas enact it, we’ve got 270 right there), we’re well on our way to decimating the Republican Party’s future chances at the White House for the foreseeable future.

Another factor to consider is that many red-leaning states have these bullshit regulations on who’s allowed to vote and how. This usually has the effect of reducing voter turnout, especially of demographics less likely to vote for Republicans, and sometimes, if not always, that’s explicitly the point. Get rid of those restrictions, you’d likely never see another Republican in the White House. And Trump agrees on this point.

If this works the way I expect it to, nothing short of a radical sea change in their politics (ideally to something less batshit and less hostile to the existence of people who aren’t white, cisgender, male, Christian, and wealthy) will get them in.

I was reflecting on this yesterday and it gave me a little hope.  I think the road will continue to be rocky for a while until the shift fully happens, then for a while longer as some of these batshit crazy rulings are slowly reversed.  However, when I look around me at my daughter's generation - I do not see any fervor for conservatism outside of a few outliers.  I see a lot of anger and energy on the progressive side.  Granted, that's anecdotal. but I live in a very conservative area of Texas and see this swelling.  Even without changes to the electoral process, I'm becoming a little more optimistic for the long-term.

Further to that, in what was a reliably red state, Beto came very close to defeating Ted Cruz last cycle.  Granted, Ted Cruz is perhaps the most hateable human this side of Tucker Carlson, but to have a former punk rocker with an anti-gun platform almost take out a massively conservative sitting senator in this state was shocking.  Tarrant County (Fort Worth) was actually blue in the last presidential election, and that's also unheard of.  Nationally, consider that Biden was not a terribly popular candidate and won (popular and electoral) pretty convincingly (again, as with Cruz, in light of the hate vote against his opponent).  People have inertia politically for sure, so things like the hearings and the current legal battles for Trump may not sway many, but it doesn't take many.  Just a gentle nudge at those margins and this thing could turn quickly.  I just hope I live long enough to enjoy it.

Hell, I suspect that if we get rid of a lot of the bullshit restrictions Republicans put on voting, Beto wouldn’t have just come very close to defeating Ted Cruz. Bear in mind that Republican ideology’s move rightward is likely to alienate, well, anyone who isn’t a rich straight white cis male, a demographic whose proportion of the population is shrinking. If the seemingly arbitrary rules that just so happened to result in a good-sized swath of the population being disenfranchised are struck down, Texas is probably going to look a lot bluer from now on.

If anybody is serious about reinstating Roe, it will take more than just voting out Republicans. It will also require all new Democrat leadership.

Pelosi campaigned for an anti-abortion candidate last month, in a primary race where the opponent was pro-choice. Hillary's running mate was anti-abortion. She famously said "feminists can be pro-choice." Biden is a Catholic and has always been anti-abortion, except sometimes when campaigning. He supported the Hyde Amendment for a long time. He also worked to get Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court, defending him against Anita Hill. Obama promised in his first campaign to codify Roe into law "on day one," but then did nothing, despite supermajorities in both houses of Congress.

For years Dems have used the issue to campaign on and raise donations, but take almost no action.

Even today, there are serious actions they could take, like ending the filibuster to vote on pro-choice legislation. Instead, Pelosi's response was to read a pro-Israel poem and send out a fundraising e-mail.

They've seen this coming for years -- the Republicans have been promising it -- and are totally unprepared.

And Shrub the war criminal only "won" through mass voter disenfranchisement (over two million Americans had their right to vote stolen because of the colour of their skin) and ball9t stuffing (whole counties in the rust belt returned numbers for Shrub that were well in excess of their r3gistered residents).

The last thing we need is to return to the back alley abortions as the only choice.

Now that it's been said out loud that contraceptives should also be disallowed...it's time to get  rid of Viagra.  Until then you cannot make me believe this isn't about the control of women who are able to become pregnant.

I still cling to some hope for this country but now that we are moving backward at warp speed, that hope is fading more and more every day.

Just now starting to realize that? I've been told y'all this was coming...

This isn't about controlling women, it's about stopping white people from becoming a minority population. YOU get upset every time the subject of white supremacy gets broached, now you're here acting confused when white supremacy affects you... I'm just gonna sit back with some popcorn.

Actually, it is (unless you somehow believe forcing women to remain pregnant isn't a form of control.... Dodgy

Considering that a large amount of non-whites are Pro-Life I find that hard to believe.... Dodgy

Which forum have you been on? Everyone has acknowledged white supremacists exist and they are dangerous. Just because we reject you batshit insane nonsense doesn't alter that....  Dodgy

Again what forum have you been on? Dodgy

Yeah because it's only white people this is going to affect. But that's about all we could expect from you anyway... Dodgy

I think it's more about money than race. Of course those two issues are tied together, but white women will have more opportunity to fly out to a haven.

I think Lauren Boebert perfectly summed up the entire predicament on twitter. Shot off a quick allahu akbar - and that's pretty much that.

Now, the white supremacists want power, and they needed to make a common cause with the theocrats in order to get or keep it - but with respect to fears of white replacement - making abortion illegal is deleterious. You're going to make moar white babbies with things like expanded tax credits and home loan schemes, particularly if abortion and birth control is still on the table as an option to prevent undesirable overbreeding in Other Races™.

The one positive in this is that Republicans' main wedge issue is now gone.
