We saw some effect or some phenomena, and were wrong about it's cause or instantiation. Getting rid of miasmatic evil does not get rid of the things it was supposed to explain. It depends on your level of magnification whether a particular suffering is evil.
Take childbirth. Most people consider the suffering of a woman giving birth a worthwhile sacrifice, herself included, because of the resultant "good" of a new human life. Her temporary suffering is balanced by positive hormones before and during, and expectations of joys and pleasures to come.
Well-- maybe humanity is a cancer on Earth bent on creating life-ending systems like nukes or AI-gone-wrong. Maybe the instinct to suffer pain for a greater good is really just another of genetic fuckery, aka evil. Good luck with that one.

If evil exists, the closest thing I would say to it is realistic things and actions, not anything myhtological, supernatrual or superstitous. Bad Things that the catholic church did to people over centuries like child molestation and popes or certain popes defending/protecting the molesters. Also the usual bad stuff like corruption, stealing, lieing, cheating, murder, fruad, taking advantage of people and the like. Thats the closest definition of what I would define as evil for now.

Does evil exist?
I think there are two types of actions you can do. Actions that benefit you (such as eating healthy food or practicing your social skills by bringing your neighbors a basket of cookies for no reason and socialize for 30 minutes to overcome your shyness/introversion) and actions which harm you (such as liquidating your retirement account, converting it to gold, and tossing it out an airplane window over the vast Pacific ocean).
Given that neither of those 2 categories of behavior seem evil to me, then I would tend to believe evil doesn't exist because nobody should be compelled to act against their own self-interests. (unless the person compelling you to act against your self-interests is he himself evil)
Now that I've contradicted myself, it's probably best (next time) to just copy an existing argument that has been eloquently stated online before and just modify/incorporate that argument into your own words and add minor nuances, so you don't contradict yourself. For example, the villain from the Saw movies (if a person like that were real). After submitting this post, I'll search online for an essay about the film and analyzing whether the villain was evil and reading what a highly-cogent person has to say about it.

I suspect that if you threw someone else's retirement account out the window, that would be really bad. And if you threw that person himself out the window, that would be evil.
Maybe you're such a nice person that you can't think of evil enough examples.
