There are atheists, such as David Mills, who would never accept the evidence of the miraculous; I am not one of those atheists.  If there was evidence, I would at least consider it.

Your point is certainly valid. Even if Jesus of Nazareth arose bodily from the dead, maybe such was due to mischievous aliens who were playing a cosmic prank, at least until their commanders found out about it, consigning all of them to janitorial duty on their long voyage back home.

And, so, per Church teaching, simply "ask(ing) God directly to forgive your sins" may not be sufficient.  The paragraph prior outlines the Church's vuews:
