So where are we now?  We live in a world where cops and soldiers are moral paragons, people are experts at correctly assessing risk, airplanes seem like dragons, and there are more people brandishing weapons at passersby than there are criminals to go around.

No, my assumptions that countries that feel safer are actually safer and that cops and soldiers are moral paragons are not based on a study. Only that guns save more lives than they take is based on a study (the Gary Kleck's study).

The belief that guns save more lives than they take can't be based on klecks study, kleck simply (mis)estimated the number of times americans pull a gun on a stranger. Doesn't have a fucking thing to do with guns saving lives, and if taken as true uncritically, would suggest that guns endanger far more lives than we know or have official reports for. Which...ofc they do.....because they're dangerous. Dangerous nuts wouldn't be convinced they needed them to survive in hellscape USA if they weren't - just like simple minded nuts somehow fail to realize that taking someones life, even in defense, can only ever be a complete wash on the "do guns save lives" question. Gun users in 400,000 of these cases [in the Gary Kleck's study] believe that the gun certainly or almost certainly saved a life.

And we know with reasonable certainty how many lives are taken by guns each year: it is in the neighbourhood of 50'000 per year. So guns save 8 times as many people as they kill.
