Atheism can never be blamed for a single death as there is no prescription within atheism that calls for any form of death. No universal doctrine you can point to that demands the death of anyone. I think the point of it is that it isn't futile, at least not from their pov.  

There's a tiny little atheist at the very bottom of every believers soul.  Associative conditioning is an effective means of firewalling that - and it's alot easier to do than confront their own worst fears and deepest disappointments.
