Ah, I remember as a kid watching the old Supergirl movie on VHS and being very disappointed. It was like watching a Superman movie, but without Superman: many of his friends were here, and she frequently talked about him. I even wanted to put the additional tape of Superman into the VCR so that he shows up in the movie.
Since then I could never watch any of the Supergirl iteration. She seems like an unimaginative character: like Superman, but with a vagina.

I think this movie will deal with her angst: sent to Earth to protect Kal-El but due to timey-wimey stuff, he's already grown up and adcting as Superman by the time she gets there. Hence, the drinking and spoiled dog.

Looking at the trailer and her cameo in this year’s Superman movie, it seems like Supergirl is basically a super powered version of Sarah Lynn from Bojack Horseman, but at least she looks competent in her heroics.
