Latest Excuse: Trump Is Getting Bad Advice

Bruni notes that when GOP officials like Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt respond to the killing of Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis by expressing “deep concerns over federal tactics and accountability” while insisting they still back Trump’s immigration priorities — they're simply being misled. Stitt has said Trump is “getting bad advice right now.”

Bruni points out that other Republicans are suddenly zeroing in on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, her top aide Corey Lewandowski, and outgoing U.S. Customs and Border Protection commander Greg Bovino as the true culprits of Trump’s actions, treating them as incompetents who “botched the mission” and “debased the president.” The problem, he writes, is that this lets Trump off the hook for decisions that clearly reflect his own instincts and desires.

The columnist wrote that it's nothing but another excuse because Trump does just fine making horrible decisions on his own.

Trump wants Republicans to 'nationalize' the 2026 midterm elections.

President Trump told a conservative podcaster on Monday that he wants Republicans to “take over the voting” in 15 states in order to “nationalize” the 2026 midterm elections, raising concerns that he may try to defy the Constitution and interfere in ways that would benefit his party.

“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over,’” Trump declared in an interview with Dan Bongino, his former deputy F.B.I. director. “We should take over the voting, the voting in at least many — 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”

The president did not explain what he meant by ‘nationalizing the voting,” nor did he say which states he had in mind. But he went on to claim that it was necessary for the GOP to seize control because “people were brought to our country to vote, and they vote illegally.”

U.S. employers announced 108,435 layoffs for the month, up 118% from the same period a year ago and 205% from December 2025. The total marked the highest for any January since 2009.

At the same time, companies announced just 5,306 new hires, also the lowest January since 2009, which is when Challenger, Gray & Christmas began tracking such data.

Also, job openings fell sharply in December to 6.54 million, to their lowest since September 2020. Available jobs are down by more than 900,000 just since October.

Trump Shares Post Depicting Obamas As Apes

A video posted by U.S. President Donald Trump's Truth Social account contained a racist depiction of Barack and Michelle Obama as apes.

At the end of the 62-second video—otherwise about voting machines—the Obamas' faces appear on apes' bodies for about 1 second as The Tokens' song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" plays.

"Disgusting behavior by the President," Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a post on X, reacting to the video. "Every single Republican must denounce this. Now."

Given the bulk of the video is about elections, it is not clear if Trump watched the whole video and was aware of the content shared at the end.
