Colbert Says CBS Refused To Air His Interview With Democrat Candidate Fearing FCC Blowback

Late Show host Stephen Colbert on Monday said CBS refused to air his interview with James Talarico, the Democratic Senate candidate from Texas, due to the Federal Communications Commission’s recent decision to enforce its “equal time” mandate on talk shows.

Colbert said the network’s lawyers also told him he was not allowed to mention this issue on air, before adding: “because my network clearly doesn't want us to talk about this, let's talk about this.”

The comedian then explained the FCC’s “equal time” rule—which requires broadcast networks to provide equal air time to opposing political candidates—and pointed out a “long time exception” that applied to news interviews and talk show interviews.

The Late Show Host then called FCC chair Brendan Carr for a notice sent by the agency last month, noting that talk shows should not qualify for this exception, claiming some of them were “motivated by partisan purposes.”

Colbert then addressed the Trump-appointed FCC chair directly, saying, “FCC you…because I think you are motivated by partisan purposes yourself.”

Colbert, however, noted, “I am going to interview James Talarico tonight, but it's not going to be on the Late Show. It's going to be on the Late Show's YouTube page.

Colbert then pointed out that the FCC has opened an investigation into ABC’s daytime talk show The View after it aired an interview with Talarico.

Under the old processes, they would get detained, and then they would go through what’s called processing—they might have their biometrics done, there might be an interview with an officer to confirm information that they have in the system, and after that conversation, they would then be put in a holding area for a few hours, and then put into one of the county jails in Minnesota. Most of the time the person’s stay for detention would be either in Minnesota or around the Midwest.

One of the big departures in current practice from what it was in the past was that ICE’s logistical acumen has reached the point of arresting someone at, let’s say, 9:00 in the morning and having them on a plane by noon. It was working like clockwork. People were not going through that longer process I described. They were going very, very quickly, and they could find themselves suddenly in El Paso or New Mexico, most often in Texas because the detention capacity in Texas has grown a lot.

Now, let’s assume this is a client of yours. Even if you knew they were at the Bishop Whipple building, there was no easy way to contact them. If you went online to the detainee locator, a lot of the time it would say the person is in custody, but it would not tell you where they were. It would direct you to call ICE at this number. Of course I’ve done this, I’ve called the number, and nobody ever picks up. It’s just a dead number. So then you have no idea at all what’s going on, but you do know how quickly they have put people on an actual plane out of the country, and have done so even when they legally should not be able to.

On top of that, we have a Trump administration that says that even if they know that it was a mistake, they don’t have to correct that mistake. Once a person is no longer in U.S. custody, they say this is a foreign-power problem, and they don’t have any means to fix it if they are out of the country.

Melania Trump, President Donald Trump's wife, is the second least popular of 11 recent first ladies, according to a poll.

YouGov asked respondents to rank 11 first ladies on a scale from "outstanding" to "poor."

It found that Melania Trump had a -16 net rating. This was the second lowest rating of any other first lady after Hillary Clinton, the wife of Bill Clinton who herself ran for president for the Democratic Party in 2016, whose net rating was slightly lower at -17 points.

At the same time, Trump has painted himself as champion of historically Black colleges and universities. The White House on Wednesday highlighted the Trump administration’s move last year to steer $500 million to HBCUs. The one-time boost largely came from federal money taken away from colleges serving large shares of Hispanic students. The award for HBCUs came days after the Education Department pulled $350 million from other grant programs targeting colleges with certain percentages of Hispanic students and other minority groups. The Trump administration said those grant programs were unconstitutional.
