As evidenced by the use of conscription in both world wars. In both cases, the draft was used less to get people to fight that it was to manage the crush of people who couldn’t wait to get ‘over there’ and give the Hun what for.

Right. In 1943 the US stopped accepting any volunteers into our military. But when the US stopped accepting volunteers in 1943, it wasn't because Rambos were chomping at the bit to give 'em what-for, it was because potential draftees were volunteering for "safer" service like the Navy or USAAF and we were already seeing that the need for infantry would grow as we further penetrated both Axis empires.

Nobody in their right mind wants to be a foot-slogger, and it was seen quickly that volunteers trended to the less taxing (supposedly), less brutal specialties. I bet many 8th AF aviators regretted their choice. No doubt my gramps did, at least for a few minutes; he died over NW Europe in a B-17 in 1943. He was a volunteer right after Pearl Harbor.

In march of 2022, near the start of the full scale invasion, the local residents of a small farming town called Voznesensk blew up a bridge and attacked the russian brigade trying to cross it with bricks, hunting rifles, and construction equipment.  They were joined by a small team of ukranian soldiers on atvs and dirtbikes with shoulder fired rockets - at this point they were very busy stopping the attempted air bridge.  30 armed vehicles, one helicopter, and 100km worth of retreat later, the russian brigade collapsed.  It was later claimed on telegram (from the russian side) that the fracas began when a bulldozer came out of an alley sideswiping the command vehicle, taking the crew and one of the two working radios they had brought to the bottom of the river.

These people command my respect, and our support. I'd do the same goddamned thing in their shoes, I like to think. Motivation matters. Trump thinking that his little air campaign against Iran will motivate conscripts to fight thousands of miles from home, well, that's just crackhead logic.

It's certainly possible for invaders to defeat the invaded, but it's never easy. There are cases of the pre-Taliban mujahideen attacking and defeating Soviet tank columns from horseback, armed with little more than rifles and grenade launchers.

Trump is trying to calm stock and commodities trading by making noises that he’s ready to declare victory and leave Iran. The mission goals have gone from regime change and WMDs to ‘destroy their missiles, destroy the facilities that make missiles, destroy their navy.’
