Now I remember - I was about 8 when my mum found the stash of three pence pieces (or 'thruppenny bits as we called them) in the lining of my coat weighing me down (those suckers were heavy!). She gave me these for the Sunday School collection plate. I didn't spend them... I just objected to giving money for that junk. My mum asked me if I really didn't want to go. I said no and that was that.
