If you wanted to progress beyond your naive misunderstanding don't you think that might be commendable?
Even if I had absolute knowledge of religion, you'd still say that I don't understand because I'm an atheist.
So, to end this. Believe what you wish. Whatever floats your boat.

I know what I'm talking about. The question is...do you?

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

You have to remember this particular god Yahweh was created in the image of men, not the other way around. As a result Yahweh has some quite nasty aspects to his personality that some humans do have and indeed some desire in have themselves, alas. As a result Yahweh is far from what a good parent should be.

Every one of you has decided to live by some moral code. You are not guilty of anything unless you are told that you were wrong and understand it, or you knew what you did was wrong before your crime. Either way, there has to be some kind of accepted code to live by which condemns us if we fail it. To say that hell has to be some physical place waiting for us to drop in would not be fit punishment for any crime. Our guilt begins immediately if we know we are wrong. Whether you believe in god or not does not remove the act from the conscience for the misdeed. A wrongdoing is what hell is in the first place. Our pain from the memories of these acts could last forever if there is no foregiveness for the act by the one who was hurt.
The idea of a firey, dry, dead, dark, etc. place are all expressions of the many ways that guilt can torment us. Besides, if hell was physical, it would be some kind of strange place to experience anything since no-one has a body anymore to be tormented with.
The idea that torment could last forever only suggests that, without intervention, hell could last continually. God never withdraws His hand. How could He foregive you if He is getting off watching you burn.
I know that the idea of God tossing you someplace makes no sense. You also know that it doesn't make sense. Finally we agree on something.

Sure I know enough to state with confidence some stuff I think to be correct, and put that up for scrutiny. I'm also very confident that no one can know (about the existence of God).

No. Even if you assume that the flood story is, in fact, a metaphor for God's delivering us from sin, even that still tends to presuppose that he's saving us from a situation that he made himself.

In law contracts signed under duress are void. Actions made under duress have no moral value for the performer and are not culpable at law.
A common theist attitude has always bemused me: Obeying what they see as the will of god from fear of hell or for the reward of heaven.Such motives seem morally bankrupt to me,albeit very human---just like YHWH in fact. Not surprising, as he was invented by humans.
