My three main points:

1. Total lack of any evidence that any gods exist or anything in the bible (or any other holy book for that matter) is true, and insistence by religious people that people should just have faith in their religion and stop thinking critically about it. Add to this a total lack of knowledge about what's really in their holy texts except for a few cherry-picked passages.

2. A preponderance of evidence which shows that claims made by religions are false and in particular shows the stories in the bible are untrue, not to mention evidence which shows that all gods were invented by man and not the other way around. Not to mention the many different gods which were invented which shows how different civilizations had different ideas about gods instead of all ideas about gods being divinely inspired.

3. The quest for total control over people's behavior by most religions. They seem to not only want to control the behavior of followers, but also seem to want to force non-followers to conform to their beliefs, either by recruitment or political power with which to pass laws to restrict people's behavior. Add to this the anti-science and anti-knowledge attitude that most religions seem to have which holds progress back.

Quite a few good answers to the OP so far. Clearly you're addressing Christianity, so here's my two pennies.

All I know for sure is that one of my top three would have to be the utter stupidity that results from accepting "salvation from" a sadistic dictator/deity who clearly loves himself far more than he could ever love any of you.



I really couldn't pick which ones deserve the "trinity" spots. There's just so much ridiculous stupidity. Talking snakes, magical trees, floating hands, super strength, levitation, resurrection, immaculate pregnancy, living in whales ............... seriously, the idiocy is beyond comprehension.

Don't forget a worldwide flood, water turning to wine, parting seas, talking bushes, talking donkeys (a lot of things which shouldn't be talking), and not to mention the world being made in seven days and man being created from mud etc.

There is only one the thing that pushes me away from Catholicism/Christianity and that is the people. They all think they lead good lives and are always right and doing the right thing, but they're just arrogant, selfish people who tend to indulge in the seven deadly sins more than they know. They are told not to judge and to accept others for who they are in the Bible, but when I walk around with a Krishna shirt on, all of a sudden I'm a devil-worshiper.

No, I do. I just made the mistake of wearing that shirt one day. Even if I didn't, they'd still call me a devil-worshiper, just for wearing the shirt.

There is only one the thing that pushes me away from Catholicism/Christianity and that is the people. They all think they lead good lives and are always right and doing the right thing, but they're just arrogant, selfish people who tend to indulge in the seven deadly sins more than they know. People don't realize that the bible commands Christians to be very judgmental, it is just they aren't to judge people by standards other than that laid down in the bible.

Also at least in the Protestant denominations (I am not sure about the other ones) if one confesses Jesus and Lord and Savoir, along with saying sorry for sins they commit. They can commit all sorts of sins (including rape and murder) and still get into heaven.
