Would you go to church just to prove it won't change anything about you?

RE: Would you go to church just to prove it won't change anything about you?
If by "prove anything" you meant prove that I am not susceptible to the Christian manner of pursuasion, then I would no more go to church to prove that then I would go to an pre-school counting lesson to prove I have 10 fingers.

But I did go to church for almost a year to prove that I am ready to provide such emotional support a former devout girlfriend of mine felt she needed. As it turns out, in retrospect that was a mistake. If an adult can not exhibit independence in her faith and a separation between her private faith and what she expects another to support her in, then she was never mature enough to be in any creditably adult relationship in the first place.

I know, what has that to do with anyth... Oh.. Big Grin

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

I'd go just to proove my point. Or lie that I went there if I can get away with it. Otherwise you'll get stuck in the 'you're closeminded' loop, which is even MORE annoying. And i would be really curious for the reactions when I tell that going to the 'right' church did not convert me.
When I was a Christian, I was annoyed with dogmatic condescending Christians. Now that I'm an atheist, I'm annoyed with dogmatic condescending atheists. Just goes to prove that people are the same, regardless of what they do or don't believe.

Or... you can say "screw you asshole. I'm not going to your propaganda machine just to prove I don't like propaganda. You're the one making positive claims about life, the universe and everything. You fucking prove it."

But if I really, really have to go to a religious service...

Some Protestant churches are charismatic and/or pentecostal, in that they believe in gifts being given out to people like speaking in tongues, prophecy and healing. The worship style in charismatic churches often involves loud music and very emotional worshipping (which includes holding of hands, not to mention clapping hands as a form of praise).

Why are you wasting your valuable time associating with these people may I ask?

If only that happened there it would be at least somewhat interesting to see.

Nothing like that in that church either, all it was was grey suits, black socks and holding hands in the air while singing hymns. Really somber and depressing really.

It must be one of those more conservative charismatic churches, From personal experience I am only familar with the ones which feature rock worship bands.

Services 3 times a week, school chapels 2 times a week, devotionals 5 times a week, prayer groups twice a month = 18 Years In Hell!

Do ex-prisoners return to San Quentin State Prison just to see if they could spend the night?!? You're outta your fuckin mind if you walk back into the cell to reminisce with the shackles!
