EW YORK (AP) - The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are winding down, Osama bin Laden is dead, and the federal government is deeply in debt. This spells the end of what was a golden decade for the defense industry.

In the decade since the Sept. 11 attacks, the annual defense budget has more than doubled to $700 billion and annual defense industry profits have nearly quadrupled, approaching $25 billion last year.

Now defense spending is poised to retreat, and so are industry profits. "We're about to go into the downhill side of the roller coaster here,"

No industry or bureaucracy will voluntarily wind itself down. They businesses and bureaucracies know how to expand themselves, not contract.

I suspect that there will be another war to engage in, to save somebody from something, or to protect American interests which are not defined, but there will be some reason to prop up defense spending. If they fail to find a war, the excuse will be to repair or maintain damaged equipment, or scrap obsolete equipment and buy new (and untested) equipment to replace it so our military "does not fall behind" other countries' militarizes.

Defense contractors are in no danger of being downsized.

Sadly, war is inevitable.

Humans don't seem anywhere near ready to give up that pursuit. I still believe we as a race will bring ourselves to near extinction before we figure it out .... maybe several times more.

The US will find a new external enemy to hate,on which it will spend billions maintaining the military-industrial status quo and which will be used to distract the great unwashed from problems at home. Jingoism is wonderful like that.

The Bush administration did such a bang up job demonising Muslims, I think the next enemy may well be another helpless Muslim country, possibly Iran.

Realistically, warmongers will suddenly find it in themselves to become peace mongers and surrender monkeys should the defense of our freedom to wag the biggest dick actually call for patriotic increase in capital gains tax, or taxes on inheritance over 1 million.

The zeal to demonized Muslims will also decrease by half if children of the wealthy stand as much chance as children of hispanic immigrant of becoming an infantryman toting 50 lbs of body armor in arabian heat (it's a dry heat, as rumsfled heathened to assure the afflicted) that still leaves their legs to be blow to ground pork by improvised explosive devices.
