It takes a wee while to get the hang of it if you have never used it before.

Good ol' physical medium is the best. As long as you have an artistic mind - you'll transition just fine. I know a couple guys who know photoshop pretty well, but they suck at creating anything very interesting because they don't have an artistic mind - just the technical know-how of using photoshop. The background is a sphere with clouds texturemapped on them. The bees are modeled in 3D studio and then imported into 3D studio max for texture mapping and better Inverse Kinematics. Once I got one bee done, it just is a case of copy/paste and setting the wings etc a little different. The final rendering was also done in 3D Studio Max. This was done back in 2001 I think, so I'm certain 3D programs have improved greatly since then. I did a little work in Lightwave 5.5 after that, and a year of working with Maya (which I loved by the way, the dynamics engine was superbe), but decided that it was enough so I stopped 3D modelling completely except for testing concepts for new robot designs in Lightwave sometimes. I did no artwork prior to 3D modelling, and I am very bad at 2D art. Texture mapping is not my strong suit either but given enough time I can usually make scenes look as I want them to.

Wow, Jay.. I adore your style, it's fantastic!
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

I really like the decorative tribal art studies you put up there too, very nice
