After doing a variety of jobs I secured an adult apprenticeship(at the age of 41) as a heavy diesel mechanic.

I now rebuild giant diesel engines for a living.

I'm an insomniac, but unlike most insomniacs, I love it.

I sleep 2-3 hours every 24 hours or so, and wake up feeling refreshed. I work only 4 days a week at the clinic, attend classes 3-4 days a week, and I have worked at the club for the better part of 10 years, so I come and go as I please. Motherhood takes the most out of me.

I mentioned this in my intro thread but I'll repeat it here. I am an ex-Civil Servant, working (bloody hard) for the DWP. I regarded it as a true career, in the sense of "dashing around wildy, randomly, and totally out of control". It was the best and most responsible job I ever had and the happiest time of my life; in fact I have been told, both at the time and since leaving the department, that I was the best and most reliable member of staff they had, and they wish I'd never left (in the words of my - Scottish - ex-line manager, the two (!) people that replaced me were "shite".)

Before that, my jobs mainly involved factory work, packing and suchlike.

At the moment, though, I am officially unfit for any kind of work, on health grounds. I doubt if I ever will be able to work again.

I read some article somewhere about getting into 'the business' (back when I was interested in such things); I remember the porn director who wrote it saying something like "If you came to me for a interview to be a typist, the first thing I'll ask you to do is do some typing. Being hired to do porn is no different."

I work as a senior software developer and technical lead for a small company you've never heard of. Meh, it pays well. Also a veteran of the armed services, half a lifetime ago.
