RE: Proposition about a new subforum for children
November 12, 2011 at 2:54 am
While I do think it is a cute idea, I am afraid it would cause a lot of issues, not the least of which being, how do we know the people signing up as children are children? I don't feel comfortable being responsible for other people's children online. Then, you have all of the issues with posting restrictions. I have no idea what it would take to implement that.
Even with all of that being said, the backlash from googling "Atheist Children Forum" coming back to this place would be too much. I'm afraid we would have people geeking the fuck out about it and possible joining up just to rally against it. It's just not as socially acceptable to talk to kids about atheism than it is to talk to them about religion. I don't like it, but that is the way it is. I can see some dipshit suing us because their kid is talking about atheism and Pokemon on this forum.
I do love the idea, in theory, though, Kichi. However, in general, I don't like the idea of kids chatting on the internet. Call me old-fashioned.

Proposition about a new subforum for children

I would think the best approach is that it is limited to children of adult forum members, then it becomes a whole lot easier to police and monitor.

I'm conflicted. My only child that can read is only 7 years old. I think it would be great practice for him to communicate with someone his age using words he had to think about and type out, so that's why I am not opposed to it. If we did it and made it for children of adult members only, that would put me at some ease, but otherwise I agree with Shell B.

Hey guys!!
Don't feel bad or guilty or anything...like I said it was an idea and if it is too difficult it is too difficult...especially taking all the objections into consideration. I have no emotional attachment to the idea but was just "putting it out there" so to speak in light of the 'Secular Parenting thread'.
No biggie. And I concur with the objections

Well if we verify that every child has a referral from a standing member, then I don't see why that part couldn't be accomplished. Shell is right though it might cause a little backlash, as in we might have more people coming to protest it or to troll the regular forums.

Why?? As each child is referred from a standing member??
As it stands my son can get on here as he is over 15years of age. Emotionally he is much younger.

the backlash will come from doing a google search for atheist+child+forum and once it get out... idk This might actually be the first place I'm aware of regarding atheism that would have a kids section. That in itself is enough of a novelty to attract militant theists.

We can handle a bunch of militant theists and trolls, it isn't as if the kids will have to deal with it. Since when did we care what other people thought about us?
