And because of the people here.
I do feel so sorry for all you Americans who have to put up with this nonsense everyday. I only get my fix of religios insanity on the internet. It's nice because you can just leave when it frustrates you.
Christianity hardly ever gets mentioned here, and if it does it's most likely in a negative sense. If anyone said "amen" or "praise the lord" in a unironic way at work they'd get very funny looks.
I live in the Northwest and it's nothing like the Bible Belt. I can go several weeks together here without hearing about god from anyone. However, I'm just back from visiting in-laws in the South and I've had my belly full. God is a sort of conversational and thinking patina that encrusts everything there. My sister and brother-in-law, don't seem to attribute anything they do or think to themselves. Instead it's I used to think x, and then y happened and god turned me around and now I think this. The fact that y is the sort of thing that would turn anyone around isn't relevant, or else god made y happen. Similarly if you get into a good school, survive a auto accident, get well or even just get better, it's god working in your life.
My husband, who grew up there, thinks it's less belief in most cases and more a kind of herd signalling that they belong to the Southern tribe.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

Hah, nicely put.

I'm pretty much just here to be mean to theists, honestly. Wizards make terrible people. It seemed a better outlet than berating everyone in my immediate surroundings (I live in the South).
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

I came to get some sense of relief from the religious wackos in my family, and to meet others atheists and freethinkers.
I've also learned some things from people on here, that are much smarter than me. That was a bonus.
I stayed, because I love it here. Mostly everyone here, is awesome. The few close-minded fascists, keep it entertaining as well.
Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.' -Isaac Asimov-

I came here after having a discussion with a creatard on YouTube (ikr) and I wanted to sharpen my debating skills. I stayed because of the incredible community, even though I go through long periods without posting... But that's mostly university's fault
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.
Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.
Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.
Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.

I found this place after owning up to my frustration with AF.com
I don't feel like such an outsider here.
You really wouldn't like AF.com now. They've gone so PC it's fucking ridiculous. That actually have a rule completely eliminating any insults at all. Of course, the site has slowed to the point that you can stay away for days and still the post you made on the busiest thread is still on the first page. Maybe they're playing nice trying to draw in a crowd. Whatever the reason, it's dying... 20 threads on the recent posts page. 18 of them have posts from some time today.

Oh, is there bigotry in the south of Middle Earth as well?
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue
