Even discounting the coverup, the way I see it, they and their sexually repressive lifestyle were very likely an accidental factor in causing the molestation in the first place: if you create an environment where practically any sexual outlet is forbidden and put a horny teenaged boy in it, you probably should expect something like this to happen.
