I have learned that genealogy stories can elicit blank stares around a dinner table faster than just about any other topic.

I don't ramble much, but I appreciate ramblers. Especially in a phone call. I'm shy and quiet, it doesn't mean I don't want to talk on the phone it just means I'm better at listening while you talk. So ramblers are the best because they don't notice as often that they're monologuing. It's always awkward when someone realizes and tries to give me the floor and then I don't have anything really to say.

I encountered a nice older gentleman business person a while back and he went on at length on his asphalting business.

I found out there is some complex mathematics involved in mixing sand and gravel of various sizes such that the amount of tar necessary to fill all the spaces between all the grains is as small as it can be.  And this is desirable since the tar is expensive, and the more sand/gravel in the mix relative to the tar, the more durable the asphalt is.

Anyhow, he went on for quite a while.  I had little on the agenda that night, so I humored him by being a good listener and asking the occasional question.

And, lo and behold, your vorlon was eventually rewarded with a very, very superior BJ when he had finally talked himself out.  I suspected he had good oral skills (obviously), and I was not disappointed.
