Gun ownership is the best example of the Dunning-Kruger effect in existence. You basically have 99% of people who say "sure, the average gun owner might be at risk of accidental injury to themselves or their children, but I'm careful/responsible."

If all the morons who shot themselves "cleaning" their guns were actually "cleaning" them the glare of shiny metal would be blinding.

I'm sure the NRA will trumpet this as another successful example of a "good guy" with a gun defending himself..... except the "good guy" wasn't so good and he was a very poor marksman.

The average gun owner is safe, his gun poses no statistical risk to him (or you). If guns went off while being cleaned (loaded or otherwise) as often as the claim is bandied around more gun owners would be shot/dead. Most are neither shot, nor dead (which is why statistical risk is negligible).
These stories are the margin riders. It's a list of grade A assholes /w guns. There are far too many of them - but in a country of 300mil plus, there are going to be alot of them. The crushing majority of us (as in all of us in the US) will never be shot, by our own gun or otherwise, we will never even meet these margin riding sons of bitches. Identifying these idiots before the fact would be ideal, but it's beyond our ability to do so at present, and we generally wait until someones done something, before we lay the weight of our legal system on their backs.
