How do we know that the military didn't turn him into part of that 2%? A military that needed that mind set to be used as the offensive tool that he became.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

You're certainly welcome to your opinion, but what you've a said here is inconsistent with my 6 years of military experience.

Agreed. I've met some of the best people here.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Possibly the military finished corrupting an already bent human being, but that is really beside the point, isn't it? The point is, if we are going to honor our war hero's and have politicians designate special days after specific people, it would be better to chose a more honorable veteran, not just the one who racked up the most kills (and enjoyed doing it).
Quality over quantity. Moral fiber over boastful bravado. By his own accounting this man is a liar and a racist at best, and possibly much worse. Why glorify this douche when there are surely real war heroes they could make a movie about or name a day after?

It's entirely possible. At the sharp end of the spear, the military doesn't want paper-pushers, and they will do what they can to strip enough people of the murder taboo in order to accomplish the mission. And of course, there are those whose taboo is weaker than others; there are those who are more skilled at rationalizing its violation; there are those who embody Arendt's "banality of evil" by killing with all the aplomb of peeling a potato; and there are those who become part of the 2% because of the trauma that the battlefield inflicts.
No doubt I'm missing some other elements and causes involved.

I'm not sure, if that's the kind of guy who should be celebrated. Going by his own quotes alone, he was a bloodthirsty prick. The world isn't any poorer without him.
If people didn't kill people in war who would ever win? It's always best to kill as many of the enemy as quickly as possible. Of course they are only the enemy because your leaders said that they are. So have fun killing them because that's the most you will ever get. When the war is over your leaders will piss in your face and never give you a dime for doing their dirty work. It's been that way for all of history.

Agreed: Best noted perhaps by

But he's the hero of our country when the guns begin to shoot."
