Good question. I guess it would be hard to tell unless he announced which one of the thousands of Gods he was. It would be nice if he would say "Hey Jeff, I'm Odin".
I am assuming that your question was just you making a point. Sorry, I'm new at all this. My inexperience in discussing my atheism is showing..along with remnants of my religious upbringing.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

But hey, nobody can force you to call yourself anything; you can use whatever label you feel comfortable with. It's just that when you're talking about the concepts and ideas behind the words it's important to be clear. From the words that you've used, I would call you an agnostic atheist (like most people here). That means you don't accept the claim "A god exists" but you also DONT make the claim "A god does not exist." Maybe it comes down to your source.
My source says they (atheist and agnostic) are two different things.
I want to be convinced totally that there is not a God.
This should do it.

The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

Sorry, I missed this one - then foolishly asked a question which had already been answered.
It wouldn't be much of a choice for me...but it would be clear...that I still couldn't be a christian. There's no way for me to get into the christian gods after-party unless I can fake it, unless he can be tricked. Which, I suppose, is moot point...since I don't want in, in the first place.

What the hell is non-orthodox atheism? Or orthodox atheism, for that matter?
Theism is the belief in a god.
A-theism is not believing in a god.
The "A" prefix is a negation. As in, Asymmetry - Without symmetry.
