There isn't much you can do when they are your means to food, shelter, and threaten that if you say even one word they will hurt those you love. When the cops tell you that they don't have enough evidence to put him away his threats become even worse. When he threatens to kill someone if you step out of line they have you where you don't get to make decisions to leave. Trust me I have had the knife in my hand. He was asleep and I could have. Killing someone though, even your attacker, is a very difficult thing to stomach and I couldn't do it. I suffer from anxiety, nightmares, emotional disconnections, I developed OCD due to my anxiety, and I am co-dependent. I wasn't like this before the abuse. Abuse breaks the victim and a broken person has a harder time freeing themselves. It is easy to say 'well you are stupid for not leaving' while you are safe and strong in knowing who you are. Until the police fail you and you are standing there knowing your attacker actually will kill someone you don't know what it means to be in a mental prison.

People are animals.  Docile animals get eaten by predators.  Don't get eaten.  Even a zebra can fight off a lion.

It's that kind of attitude that allows a small gang of outlaws to take over a whole town.  The townspeople are too frightened to ambush them.  Once people discover that they can run over you without any consequences to themselves why would they ever stop?  If you are worried about surviving you can survive in prison.
