A riveting account of the astonishing experiences and discoveries made by linguist Daniel Everett while he lived with the Pirahã, a small tribe of Amazonian Indians in central Brazil.

Everett, then a Christian missionary, arrived among the Pirahã in 1977–with his wife and three young children–intending to convert them. What he found was a language that defies all existing linguistic theories and reflects a way of life that evades contemporary understanding: The Pirahã have no counting system and no fixed terms for color. They have no concept of war or of personal property. They live entirely in the present. Everett became obsessed with their language and its cultural and linguistic implications, and with the remarkable contentment with which they live–so much so that he eventually lost his faith in the God he’d hoped to introduce to them.

Over three decades, Everett spent a total of seven years among the Pirahã, and his account of this lasting sojourn is an engrossing exploration of language that questions modern linguistic theory. It is also an anthropological investigation, an adventure story, and a riveting memoir of a life profoundly affected by exposure to a different culture. Written with extraordinary acuity, sensitivity, and openness, it is fascinating from first to last, rich with unparalleled insight into the nature of language, thought, and life itself. (less)

I find the phrase "we believe..." to be really creepy. It suggests to me someone who has been taking a lot of things on authority.

I do at least appreciate the ownership of an opinion though, rather than trying to state opinions as facts. It would just be nice if it was a personal opinion, backed by personal reasons.

The spirit realm is more real that the physical. Most are just blind to it.

That's strange, because if someone asks me for a physical jug of milk I can find it pretty easy in my fridge, but as soon as someone asks for ghost milk...I run into trouble?  What kind of blindness are we talking about here, what kind of organ?  Are my spirit eyes malfunctioning?  Seems redundant, having two sets of eyes, particularly if one set of eyes sees things that are "more real" than the others.  You'd think that I'd be able to find the ghost milk easier than the jug of vitamin d.

Meanwhile, -in- the real world, descriptions of experiences that are "more real than the real world" are typical of dreams, hallucinations, and delusional thoughts. "The clouds parted, the colors were brighter, the music was clearer, and then...I saw the ghost of a dead jew!" Mind you, I don't think that the faithful are all delusional...they just have a compulsion to piously describe themselves as such.

If we're blind to it, whose fault would that be I wonder? How can I use sensory equipment I was never given?

Oh you're back! Okay, you went to sleep, but these things happen to some people.

So when you're back again, could you please define love in your own words for us? It's good to have a definition we agree on if we are going to debate this.
I don't believe you. Get over it.

thank you for your feedback. I don't understand why you care enough to know me since this is just for a project. If you must know I'm a geek who loves memes, marvel, painting, music (metal, alt. some rap, some classic rock, indie, and some metal core), netflix, chinese food, youtube, photography, did i mention memes.

I also play drums in a metalcore band. I want tattoos. I mainly watch history documentaries.

I like playing with kids.

food is amazing but im a vegetarian

I really really love art and music okay

Yea you missed the point. If I don't care enough to know you why should I care about your project?

Ghost milk? Silly Rhythm, everyone knows you don't milk ghosts. Too chalky.

That said, thinly sliced ghost fried lightly in oil is divine.

Learn how to spell favorite.

Lighthouse has.

You should learn that there is also British English and other forms of English around the world. We spell words like organise, metre, Aluminium, colour, accoutrements, anaemia, oestrogen, defence, cancelled etc. This is because the words come from other European languages whereas Noah Webster decided to create a specifically American way of spelling for a new country.

I haven't read the whole thread, I just jumped into random pages and skimmed through. But the OP is asking a question based on the assumption that her god exists. It does not. It cannot.

Humans are not rational creatures. We are animals evolved to survive in a particularly environmental niche. So the OP may immediately rail against the idea that there is no god, but that's because she has probably been taught from an early age that there is one. Or she hasn't been taught critical thinking skills and just accepts what she has been told that also feels good. Science has shown us that the human brain has emotional reactions that are then consciously rationalised.

First, what is a god? We can't even define it, so how can anyone believe in it, especially considering that there is no difference between their god and anything else that they can imagine. And if you could define what a god was, and explain it, then it wouldn't be a god but an alien creature.

Secondly, the very idea of a god is at odds with what we know about how the universe works based on scientific knowledge. And we know that science works. We wouldn't have the modern world if it did not. Medication, transport, weather forecasting, computing, mining and drilling for oil, GPS for example are all based on science that contradicts the Bible. So the OP is arguing from her own personal ignorance by dismissing all these.

The Original Post has about as much connection to reality as arguing about Father Christmas / Santa Claus 's motivations for invading little children's bedrooms and delivering presents if they're 'good'. The only relevance there is to real life is to discuss the OPs own standards of ethics and morality.

There is no god. There cannot be a god. We cannot even define what a god is. The whole idea is nonsensical. It literally is on a par with assuming the existence of Father Christmas / Santa Claus or the tooth fairy.
